A new non-invasive laser spectroscopy technique, 'Spatially Offset Raman Spectroscopy' (SORS), was developed at STFC's Central Laser Facility on its ultrafast laser facilities.

The method permits chemical probing of solid objects and opaque containers. Potential applications include the detection of concealed explosives and counterfeit drugs through bottles, quality control of pharmaceutical formulations and non-invasive diagnosis of bone disease and cancer.

The underpinning research has received several international awards (2009 Charles Mann Award, 2002 and 2006 Meggers Awards and 2008 Measurement in Action Award).

To date, 8 patents have been filed on the background technology and over 40 peer reviewed articles were published. In 2008, a new spinout company Cobalt Light Systems Ltd (link opens in a new window) was formed by STFC with a VC funding of £750k to manufacture SORS instruments.
