Direct spinout companies

The following companies have been formed as a direct spinout from Central Laser Facility technologies.

Cobalt Light Systems Ltd

Cobalt Light Systems Ltd (link opens in a new window): is STFC’s spin out established in partnership with STFC Innovations Ltd to commercialise STFC’s revolutionary techniques for non-invasive chemical analysis of pharmaceutical products based around Spatially Offset Raman Spectroscopy (SORS). The SORS method, which is backed up by 8 patents and received an international scientific award, was pioneered at STFC through a large scale facility research programme. The technology is also applicable in medical diagnosis and security screening. In 2008, Cobalt Light Systems Ltd has successfully secured £750K investment enabling it to proceed to the development of first commercial instruments.

Scitech Precision Ltd

Scitech Precision Ltd (link opens in a new window) is CLF’s spin-out supplying complex, multi-material assemblies or ‘targets’ for high power laser experiments on large scale laser facilities in the UK and abroad. These micron scale targets act as the ‘sample’ for investigations into the physics of extreme conditions comparable to temperatures and pressures at the centre of the sun, and are at the forefront of research into laser-induced fusion as a potential energy source and particle beam therapies for cancer treatment.

LaserThor

Working in conjunction with the rail industry, LaserThor has brought state of the art laser and optics technology to the rail industry to solve a long-standing and hitherto intractable problem: the removal at speed of leaf and other contamination from the railhead.

Rutherford Optics

Rutherford Optics (link opens in a new window) is a company that specialises in technical solutions for high-power laser systems using the expertise derived from the Central Laser Facility.
