Control Measures - Low Risk Lasers

Low Risk lasers can be used anywhere on site provided that the person responsible for their use implements the default control measures set out below; otherwise a risk assessment must be undertaken before use.

Basic beam path design principles for open beam paths low risk lasers are:

  • Locate horizontal beams above or below eye level
  • No upwardly directed open beam paths
  • Terminate the beam at the end of its useful range

The use of optical viewing aids and optical components (magnifiers, eye loupes, concave mirrors, binoculars and telescopes) must be strictly controlled around Class 1M and 2M lasers:

Some low risk lasers present an extreme dazzle hazard and must not be used in areas where working at heights and vehicle driving is taking place. More generally, visible beam lasers must not be deliberately pointed at people or into areas where other people unconnected with the laser work may be present; and the user must not stare into the beam.
