Senior Laser Scientist

Background

Studied physics at Universities of Würzburg and St Andrews, graduated in 1998 (diploma, with distinction). Post-graduate researcher at Max-Planck Institute for Meteorology, Hamburg. PhD in geoscience, awarded by University of Hamburg in 2004: “Application and Development of Water Vapor DIAL Systems".

Klaus has been at the CLF since 2004, initially working on design and construction of the Astra-Gemini dual-beam PW facility. In 2008 he was put in charge of developing a new kind of high-energy laser architecture, codenamed DiPOLE. The success of DiPOLE has led to the foundation of CALTA in which Klaus has played a leading role ever since.

Klaus is a member of the German Physical Society (DPG) and of the Optical Society (OSA). He served as a Programme Committee member for CLEO US from 2013 till 2017, the last two years as sub-committee chair. He has co-authored over 25 articles in peer-reviewed journals and numerous other publications (see publication list on ORCID). His h-index currently stands at 14.

Research Interests

Solid state lasers, high-energy diode-pumped lasers in particular, associated components and applications such as in plasma physics, remote sensing, ultrafast spectroscopy, and materials processing.
