Each laboratory housing hazardous lasers has an appointed Laser Responsible Officer (LRO) who is responsible for laser radiation safety in that laboratory. The LRO (and deputy) is identified on the local safety card for the area(s) in which you will be working. They will appoint Laser Nominated Persons (LNPs) to undertake specific tasks, setting out the constraints on their activities.

LNPs may be given specific titles e.g. Area Operator where duties are extended.

As a Laser Nominated Person you must:

  • be familiar with and abide by the Standing Orders for the area in which you work, and follow the prescribed procedures for the equipment that you are using.
  • Work within the constraints placed upon your activities by the LRO.
  • Undertake training as requested by the LRO.
  • Not make any significant changes to laser beam paths, beam wavelengths or safety devices, nor introduce new lasers to the laboratory without the authorisation of the LRO.
  • Declare any pre-existing eye condition you may have, since this could affect the risk assessment.

Be conversant with and follow the procedures for real or suspected eye injuries.
