Background

MChem in Chemistry With Industrial Experience, University of Manchester.
1 Year Industrial Experience at the LSF as a University Placement Student (2016). The placement involved working with optical tweezers to perform Raman spectroscopy on trapped aerosol particles, and using back-focal-plane displacement detection to calculate forces exerted on the trapped particle.  Other work included use of a Langmuir trough to analyse monolayers of lipid mixtures.

General

Connor re-joined the LSF in 2018 as a PhD student at Royal Holloway, University of London, in a CASE Studentship with Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. Under supervision from Dr. Andy Ward, he is using Mie spectroscopy and laser tweezers to investigate the optical properties of single atmospheric aerosol particles. Over the course of the project, the broadband light scattering technique will be extended from visible to ultraviolet wavelengths and will be used to analyse atmospheric aerosol samples from a range of environments.
