Laser safety eyewear

Laser protective eyewear is not a substitute for other precautions. They should be used if, after applying all reasonably practicable control measures, adequate protection for the eyes has not been achieved.

Laser safety eyewear is marked to show the wavelength(s) for which it provides protection and the level of protection. The level of protection required for each laser type will be listed on the door safety sheets displayed at the entrance to the Laser Area.

Classes of laser

Lasers are classified on the basis of their accessible emission. It is the manufacturer’s responsibility to classify the laser.

The following pages provide a brief summary of the classifications. More detailed information can be obtained through the full code or by discussion with the Laser Responsible Officer (LRO).
