Responsibilities

Facility staff will:

  • Provide guidance and support for experiments on the facility
  • Maintain oversight of all experiments to ensure safe practices
  • Provide authorisations for the use of any known external equipment
  • Provide authorisations to work in hazardous environments, such as at height or within enclosed environments.
  • Ensure a safe working environment whilst maintaining potentially hazardous equipment
  • Sign-off beamline routes within the experimental area prior to the start of the experiment.

Experimental visitors must:

  • Give prior warning (at least one month) to facility staff of all equipment, chemicals, biohazards and potential hazardous items brought on site.
  • Ensure facility staff have authorised the use of potentially hazardous equipment prior to use
  • Ensure that the AO is aware of all potentially hazardous systems brought on site
  • Read the Local Area Safety Card at the start of EVERY experiment.
  • Follow all experimental safety in place.
  • Wear protective eyewear at all times when required to do so.
  • Report any accident or near miss that occurs whilst on site.
  • Inform facility staff of any system failures within the experimental areas.
  • Maintain safe fire exit routes of width >0.8 m within the experimental area.
  • NOT interfere with any of the safety systems (such as laser interlock systems).
  • NOT alter any beam paths without the express permission of the facility staff.
  • NOT use any systems for which they are not authorised

Area Operator (AO) & Deputy must:

  • Have the required training to lead the experimental team.
  • Have the required safety training to ensure operational safety for the entire experimental team.
  • Ensure that all safety in place is adhered to al all times by the experimental team.
  • Ensure that only registered experimenters are permitted to work in an area.
  • Provide a verbal warning to all personnel prior to introducing any potential hazards.
  • Ensure all personnel wear protective eyewear prior to the introduction of hazardous lasers.
  • Personally ensure that the experimental area is evacuated by ALL personnel when required to do so according to area specific regulations.
  • Be responsible for the control of all operational hazards, including:
    • Laser systems
    • Materials/substances
    • Electrical items
    • Vacuum systems
    • Cryogenic systems
    • Gas systems
