"Standing Orders" are a set of rules and instructions permanently in force to establish safe practices, responsibilities, hazards and emergency procedures associated with a particular area. They usual consist of a compilation of operational rules, emergency instructions and Safe Systems of Work (SSoW).

Each facility will have a set of Standing Orders that users must read before being authorised to work in the laboratory. Below are some key points you will find within the Standing Orders for the facility where you will be working.

  • Responsibilities of Facility staff
  • Responsibilities of Experimental visitors
  • Responsibilities of Target area operator (TAO) & deputy
  • Specific area safety
  • Emergency instructions.
