Area Safety

All laboratories within the CLF are currently unclassified or classified as ‘supervised’. The classification of a ‘supervised’ area is one where the accessible effective dose rate is less than 7.5 µSv/h averaged over the working day. A ‘controlled’ area is one where the accessible effective dose rate is greater than 7.5 µSv/h averaged over the working day. Unlike supervised areas, controlled areas require the continuous radiation monitoring of all personnel working within the area.

Access to the RDA requires only authorisation. Authorised persons must have read both the radiation local rules and local standing orders before entering. A list of personnel authorised to work in the area during a high intensity experiment must be displayed on the access door to the area. The layout of the RDA, including emergency exits is displayed on the local area safety card.

A detailed copy of the Local Rules along with specific risk assessments for work not normally covered is displayed at the entrance of each RDA. These should be consulted in detail before any work is undertaken.
