Responsibilities

The duty of the RPS is to ensure that the local rules and relevant STFC safety codes are adhered to alongside any relevant national and international regulations, such as the Radioactive Substances Act (RSA93) and the Ionising Radiation Regulations (IRR99).

All visitors working within RDA’s must:

  • Adhere to all regulations in place.
  • Obtain (through the RPS) the written approval of the Division Head (for work in the LSF) or the director of the CLF (for work elsewhere in the CLF) before beginning any work with radioactive substances. No radioactive substance may to be brought onto the RAL site without prior written approval from one of these people.
  • Only work with radioactive materials when authorized to do so by the RPS.
  • Handle only radioactive material with dose rates not exceeding 20 µSv/h at 10cm, and minimise all exposures as far as possible
  • Consult with the RPS if unsure of practices.
  • Report any induced activities of > 20 µSv/h @ 10cm to the RPS
  • Log (if authorized to do so) any induced radioactive materials > 0.1 µSv/h at 10cm in the local record book provided.
  • NOT remove any materials from the RDA’s with dose rates exceeding 0.1 µSv/h on contact unless being transported (with prior agreement of the RPS) between RDA’s and housed in a suitable container for transporting radioactive materials.
  • NOT interfere with or remove radiation shielding unless under direct authorization of the RPS. Any authorised shielding modifications must be checked by the RPS prior to operational activities.
